Chapter Contents

Elektron includes a number of features that allow network administrators to keep a close eye on their server. This chapter describes how to configure Elektron options related to accounting.

Elektron Accounting Features

Elektron accounting works at two levels: at the server level, extensive logging capability shows the status of the Elektron server; with RADIUS accounting, the status of network access points is maintained. The Elektron Enterprise Settings application allows you to configure settings for both levels.

Accounting is a critical element of network security. It can help administrators ensure that only legitimate users are accessing the network, and to determine when the network is under attack.

Elektron Log Settings

The Log Settings pane allows you to configure Elektron logging options, including the amount of information logged, log file rotation, and event notification.

Elektron Logging

Elektron is configurable to emit information at different logging levels. The available levels are:

  • Minimal With this option selected, the only information logged is errors. No additional diagnostic information is included.
  • Normal The Normal option includes all error messages, as well as warnings of issues that could affect the operation of the server.
  • Verbose To include additional information to help troubleshoot connection problems, select Verbose.
  • Debug This option includes the maximum amount of information, and includes detailed information about all aspects of the server operation. This option should only be enabled to debug connection problems, and disabled once the problems are resolved. The Debug option may log sensitive information such as user passwords. Use it with care.

You may choose to have server log files rotated periodically. This allows you to archive or erase older log files without interrupting the Elektron server. You may choose from hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly log rotation, or not to rotate the log files at all.

SMTP Server

To send event notifications via email, Elektron must be configured to communicate with your SMTP server. The options configurable in the Log Settings pane are:

  • SMTP Server This is the hostname or IP address of your SMTP server.
  • SMTP Port The TCP port on which your SMTP server listens for incoming connections. Most servers use port 25.
  • From Address You may optionally enter an email address that will be used as the From: address for email notifications.

Access Log

The Access Log pane displays recent login attempts. The pane displays the raw contents of the log, including the most recent entries.

On Mac OS X systems, the server access log file is located at:

/Library/Logs/Periodik/radiusd_access.log

On Windows systems, the server access log file is located at:

%SYSTEM%\Logfiles\Periodik\radiusd_access.log

Error Log

The Error Log pane displays server diagnostic information. The amount of information logged can be controlled using the Log Settings pane.

On Mac OS X systems, the server error log file is located at:

/Library/Logs/Periodik/radiusd_error.log

On Windows systems, the server error log file is located at:

%SYSTEM%\Logfiles\Periodik\radiusd_error.log
